A year after their release, Zone 9 Bloggers will reappear to Court

Four of the Zone 9 bloggers,  Abel Wabella,  Atnafu Berhane, Befkadu Hailu and Natnael Feleke will reappear to the Federal Supreme Court, tomorrow October21, 2016 for a verdict and Soliana Shimelis’s case will continue to be entertained in absentia.

After their arrest on April 2014, the bloggers were charged with terrorism and the Federal High Court which has a first instance jurisdiction over the case acquitted them. However, the Federal Public Prosecutor appealed against the decision of the lower court and the Federal Supreme Court, a higher court with an appellate jurisdiction over the matter accepts its appeal.

On tomorrow's trial, the court is expected to give a final verdict over the oral argument the defendants and the prosecutor presents in addition to a verdict on the documentary evidences presented against the Bloggers. If the court accepts the prosecutor's appeal, the case will send back to the Federal High Court and the trial will resume while the bloggers rearrested.

On the other hand, one of the bloggers, Befkadu Hailu had still a pending case with the same cause of action under a lenient charge at the Federal High Court and Natnael Feleke also had a pending case in which he is alleged of incitement by talking politics.

በአገራችን ብቸኛው ሰብኣዊ መብት ላይ አተኩሮ የሚሠራው መንግሥታዊ ያልሆነ የሰብኣዊ መብቶች ጉባኤ (ሰ.መ.ጉ.) ከተመሠረተ 25 ዓመታት ሞሉት፡፡ ቀድሞ የኢትዮጵያ ይባል የነበረው ኢ.ሰ.መ.ጉ. በበጀት እጦት ምክንያት በ3 ክልሎች ብቻ ጽሕፈት ቤቶች ስለነበሩት ሰ.መ.ጉ. ለመባል ተገዶ ከርሟል፡፡ ይሁን እንጂ በቅርቡ ለማገገም እያደረገ ባለው ጥረት የጽሕፈት ቤቶቹን ቁጥር 6 አድርሶ የቀድሞ ሥሙን ለማስመለስ እና ሥራውንም በአገሪቱ ክልሎች በሙሉ ለማድረስ እየሞከረ ነው፡፡ የተቋሙ ዋና ዳይሬክተር አቶ ብፅአት ተረፈ ዛሬ (ቅዳሜ፣ ጥቅምት 5፣ 2009) ከወጣው አዲስ አድማስ ጋዜጣ ጋር ባደረጉት ቃለ ምልልስ እንደገለጹት፣ ‹በተለይ ከምርጫ 97 ጋር በተያያዘ በርካታ ባለሙያዎቻቸውና መረጃዎቻቸው ልክ ሕገ መንግሥቱን በኃይል ለመናድ የተንቀሳቀሱ በማስመሰል በመነገሩ፣ ተቋሙን ጥለው እንዲሰደዱ በማድረግ ተዳክመው ቆይተዋል፡፡ ሌላው በ2001 የወጣው የበጎ አድራጎት ድርጅቶች አዋጅ ተፅዕኖ አሳርፎባቸዋል፡፡ በተለይ በጀት ከውጭ አለማግኘታቸው ጽ/ቤቶቻቸውን እንዲዘጉና በርካታ ሠራተኞቻቸውን እንዲቀንሱ አድርጓቸዋል፡፡›

The 2016 Martin Ennals Award Laureate is announced

 Ilham Tohti was selected by a jury of 10 global Human Rights organizations as the 2016 Martin Ennals Award Laureate. The Award is given to Human Rights Defenders who have shown deep commitment and face great personal risk. The aim of the award is to provide protection through international recognition. Strongly supported by the City of Geneva, the Award will be held on October 11th, 16:00 Ethiopian time.

The Laureate: Ilham Tohti (China)

Ilham Tohti has worked peacefully for two decades to foster dialogue between Uyghurs and Han Chinese. He has been subject to official surveillance and harassment since 1994. On January 15, 2014, Ilham Tohti was arrested on charges of separatism and terrorism and sentenced to life imprisonment after a two-day trial.

In addition to Ilham the two other finalists who received Martin Ennals Prizes; these are:

Razan Zaitouneh (Syria) 

Razan has dedicated her life to defending political prisoners, documenting violations, and helping others free themselves from oppression. She founded the Violations Documentation Center (VDC), which documents the death toll and ill-treatment in Syria's prisons. She had started to cover all sides in the conflict when she was kidnapped, alongside with her husband and two colleagues, on 9 December 2013. Her whereabouts remain unknown.

Zone 9 Bloggers (Ethiopia)

Kality prison in Ethiopia has 8 zones and holds many journalists and political prisoners. 9 young activists called themselves ‘Zone 9’ as a symbol for Ethiopia as a whole. They document human rights abuses and shed light on the situation of political prisoners in Ethiopia. Six of its members were arrested and charged with terrorism. Although they have now been released, three are in exile while four of the six remaining in Ethiopia are still facing charges and are banned from travel.

Zone 9 wants to congratulate the winner of the award and hope the award will have an impact on securing the release of Illham. We wish him best of luck in the future.

10 ዕውቅ የዓለም የሰብኣዊ መብቶች ድርጅቶች የሚያዘጋጁት ዓመታዊው የማርቲን ኤናልስ የሰብዓዊ መብት የ2016 የመጨረሻ ሦስት ዕጩዎች መካከል ዞን 9 የጦማሪዎች እና አራማጆች ስብስብ አንዱ መሆኑ ግንቦት ወር ላይ መገለጹ ይታወሳል፡፡ ከዞን 9 በተጨማሪ የእድሜ ልክ እስራት ፍርደኛው ቻይናዊው ኢልሃም ቶቲ እና በሶሪያ አማፅያን የተጠለፈችው ሶሪያዊቷ ራዛን ዛይቱን መታጨታቸው ይታወቃል፡፡

ዛሬ አመሻሹ ላይ ይፋ ይሆናል ተብሎ ሲጠበቅ የነበረው አሸናፊ ኤ.ኤፍ.ፒ. የተባለው የዜና ወኪል ቀድሞ አሸናፊውን በመግለጹ ማርቲን ኤናልስም ይፋ እንዲሆን አድርጓል፡፡ በዚህም መሰረት ቻይናዊው የዊጉር ሕዝብ የመብት ታጋይ ኢልሐም ቶቲ የዚህ ዓመት ሎሬት በመሆን ተመርጧል፡፡ የሽልማት ስነስርዓቱ ዛሬ ምሽት በኢትዮጵያ ሰዓት አቆጣጠር ከአንድ ሰዓት ጀምሮ ይከናወናል፡፡

Zone 9 Blogger, Natnael Feleke Arrested

Yesterday October 04, 2016 Natnael Feleke, a Zone 9 Blogger and two of his friends, Tsedeke Digafe and Addisalem Mulugeta are taken detention. The reason given by the police about their arrest is while sitting at Lalibela Restaurant and talking loudly about the death of hundreds on Sunday, October 02, 2016 at the yearly Thanksgiving ceremony in Bishoftu, Ethiopia and blaming the government for the deaths occurred, they uttered seditious remarks in a public place.

Natnael and his friends brought to the Federal First Instance court, Kera Branch Criminal Bench this morning and the judge adjourned them for tomorrow October 06, 2016 to give a decision on the bail issue.

We at the Zone 9 are deeply saddened by this news that Ethiopia is becoming a country citizens can’t even discuss anything political. Thus, we request the Ethiopian government to release Natnael and two of his friends unconditionally.

የዞን ዘጠኝ ጦማሪው ናትናኤል ፈለቀ ትናንት ማክሰኞ መስከረም 24፣ 2009 ከስራ ሰዓት በኋላ ጸደቀ ድጋፌ እና አዲስአለም ሙሉጌታ ከተባሉ ሁለት የስራ ባልደረቦቹ ጋር በተለምዶ ‹ስታዲየም› ተብሎ የሚታወቀው አካባቢ በሚገኝው ‹ላሊበላ› ሬስቶራንት ውስጥ ተቀምጠው “ጮክ ብለው ‘የቢሾፍቱ ጭፍጨፋ የመንግስት ጥፋት ነው’፣ ‘እያሸበረ ያለው ራሱ መንግስት ነው’ በማለት አውረተዋል”፤ በሚል ምክንያት በፖሊስ ተይዞ ታሰረ፡፡ ናትናኤል እና ጓደኞቹ ዛሬ መስከረም 25፣ 2009 ጠዋት በፌደራል የመጀመሪያ ደረጃ ፍርድ ቤት ቄራ ምድብ የወንጀል ችሎት ቀርበው የዋስትና ጉዳይ ለማየት አሻራ ይስጡና ነገ መስከረም 26፣ 2009 በድጋሚ እንዲቀርቡ ታዘው ወዳረፉበት በአዲስ አበባ ፖሊስ ኮሚሽን የካዛንችስና አካባቢው ፖሊስ ጣቢያ (በተለምዶ 6ተኛ እየተባለ የሚታወቀው) ተመልሰዋል፡፡

የናትናኤል እና የጓደኞቹ እስር አሁን አገሪቱ እየሔደችበት ያለውን መንገድ በሚገባ ያሳያል፡፡ ኢትዮጵያ ከጓደኞች ጋር ሰብሰብ ብለው የፖለቲካ ጉዳይ ማውራት የሚያሳስርባት አገር መሆኗም ለሁላችንም አሳዛኝ ነው፡፡ ስለዚህም ናትናኤልና ጓደኞቹ ሰውነታቸው ያስገኝላቸውን ሃሳባቸውን የመግለፅ መብታቸውን ከመጠቀማቸው ባለፈ ቅንጣት ታክል የሕግ መተላለፍ ያልፈፀሙ በመሆኑ አሁኑኑ ይፈቱ ዘንድ እንጠይቃለን፡፡
